In the debate over subjectivity versus objectivity, perhaps few fields are as divisive as art. Very likely though, many people are directed in what to consider as ‘masterpieces’ by art critics, museum art curators and social trends, which inevitably leads to an almost universally accepted standard of taste, similar in scope and manner to trends in fashion. This also results in some artists and artworks being put on a podium to the detriment of other possibly equally valuable or unique works that are marginalised or disregarded. But is there a universal standard of beauty that is at the heart of what we universally recognise as masterpieces?
Taking the original and two restoration attempts of “Immaculate Conception” by the Baroque artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo as a useful comparison, we can see an example of what is considered a ‘masterpiece’ (the copy of an original), and two examples that are seen as ‘failures’ (the restorations). While few critics or members of the public would disagree that the original is certainly an example of talent and skill that results in a successful representation of one kind of beauty, it is unlikely that the two attempts at restoration would be considered even slightly comparable in quality, skill or, importantly, beauty. Is this because they are inherently ugly? Or is it simply because they are being compared to a work which has already been universally recognised as beautiful?
Do you find the depiction of the Virgin Mary to be beautiful as a person in Murillo’s work, or as a work of art? Would it be different if the original had depiction had been of an ‘ugly’ person, or if the painting was not an accurate representation of the actual person being painted? What if the restorers based their versions on real people who they thought were beautiful, and those depictions were accurate? Would they still fail because they haven’t made an exact copy of the original by the artist? Or is the failure because we do not see the constructs of beauty in symmetry or flawlessness that we have been indoctrinated into thinking are the only acceptable standards?
