我們一起來看看這篇新聞,以及外師的看法吧~ Two fatal failings of the current global system of capitalism under American dominance are evident in the news from this article. First, there is the ethical issue that is never even considered by America: if a country can look after its own interests at the expense of all other nations of the world, should it just go ahead and trample all over everyone else? The USA buying up basically all the supplies of drug remdesivir in order to ensure that only Americans have access to what is currently seen as the most effective treatment for COVID-19 is no doubt seen by many Americans as a natural implementation of Trump’s “America First” policy. Considering that the USA has the most cases and deaths from COVID-19 – at more than double the country with the next highest number of deaths – because of their own broken healthcare “system” and wealthy-take-all society, it is almost to be expected that they would do something as selfish as secure a limited resource for themselves without caring a fig for the rest of the world. The irony of this situation is bitterly tragic because they are so incapable of looking after their own people that they have to resort to desperate measures that imperil all other nations of the world. This is totally consistent with their track record of invading other countries to secure resources such as oil for themselves, and to install American-friendly dictators to sell trillions of dollars of weapons to, at the same time as claiming to be promoters of peace, human rights and democracy. It also matches their modus operandi of creating trade pacts that mostly favour US industries and companies whilst spouting the virtues of “free trade” established on a rules-based order where of course it is the US that makes the rules. It is these very rules that have been created to benefit America alone that lead to the second horrendous issue in the article – that a private company can own the exclusive rights to a life-saving drug that is desperately needed around the world, and yet that company is not obliged to release its patent or at licence its rights to other nations to help save lives. Clearly this system of exclusivity is doomed to failure, as is a global order where one greedy country tries to monopolise everything for its own economic benefit. In a time of global crisis such as the world faces now, we can ever more clearly see the nations whose words ring hollow and whose promises are empty. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/30/us-buys-up-world-stock-of-key-covid-19-drug ===我是分隔線=== 💡這個專欄目的是訓練同學聰明閱讀。
