So, what of coal? Nuclear power is a hugely risky source of electricity to be using in Taiwan, but is relying on coal for over seventy percent of electricity production any better? Thermal coal has been a fossil fuel commonly used for power since the beginning of electricity generation, and this is because it has been cheap, and global reserves of coal are relatively widespread and easily mined, leading to a bustling trade and relatively stable supply. So much for the advantages.
Turning to the drawbacks, using thermal coal for the generation of power has massive negative effects on the environment and human health. A major contributor of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, coal mining also pollutes the soil and water surrounding mines and power plants, including by causing acid rain. Air pollution from burning coal, in the form of particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometres or smaller (PM2.5), also has dire consequences for the health of people and animals that breathe it in, having been estimated to cause at least 800,000 premature human deaths every year. On top of that, the by-products of burning coal also include toxic and radioactive waste.
In sum, coal is not a viable solution to Taiwan’s energy needs, and Taiwan, much like Australia, is very much behind the rest of the world in relying so heavily on this heavily polluting, health and environment-destroying source of fuel, as global peak coal use already happened in 2013. Luckily, other countries are developing and implementing technologies that could provide better energy security and much cleaner and greener energy, and Taiwan is well situated to jump on this bandwagon.
