Fake news seems to be the hot-button issue that just never leaves the limelight these days. However, although a shill, a troll or a bot on social media might be comparatively easy to spot for those with discerning minds, can you be sure that you can trust what you see with your own two eyes?
Add fake videos to the mix, and it makes it very difficult to determine the authenticity of something, even based on video footage – a form of proof that continues to be considered as conclusive evidence, for example in criminal trials.
As the authors of this article make clear though, the issue is not necessarily about if you can spot a fake or not. The fact that the seeds of doubt can be sown in people’s minds is often cause enough for chaos to follow, because once the veracity of everything is in doubt, nothing can be considered for certain; even real footage of actual events can be dismissed as fake by detractors. See if you can spot the fakes.
