Why is a tiny, densely-populated island located in the middle of an area prone to massive earthquakes, typhoons and tsunamis relying on nuclear power to meet its energy needs? First, let us dispel the myths. Nuclear power is not clean, green, or cheap. It still generates carbon emissions over its entire lifespan, and more importantly, it creates completely unusable and extremely toxic radioactive waste that must be safely and securely stored somewhere at huge expense and risk – currently on Orchid Island – with is no viable solution besides keeping it there for thousands of years and endlessly accumulating more and more of it; all the while desperately hoping that no natural disaster or accident will result in that waste leaking out. It really is the most blatant example of ignorantly kicking the can down the road for future generations to endlessly suffer the consequences.
Second, nuclear power is not safe. Even in places which are not earthquake-, typhoon- or tsunami-prone, nuclear power plants have a horrendous track record of serious radiation leaks and accidents, and the examples of Chernobyl and Three-Mile Island are testament to that. So, if you know someone who supports nuclear power, ask them if they support it so much that they would be willing to live next door to a nuclear power plant, or have the radioactive waste stored under their homes, because if they would not accept these realities, then they do not actually support the use of nuclear power on a tiny island such as Taiwan.
What is the solution then, if nuclear power is a horrible option, and coal-powered stations and natural gas are not much better? Geothermal power should be Taiwan’s answer! It is a mystery why Taiwan still relies on dirty and dangerous sources of energy, yet has ideal conditions for generating geothermal power, since this island is dotted with hot springs and other easily accessible sources of geothermal energy. Taiwan is really behind the curve of many other countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Turkey that already successfully use this renewable technology. If a country like the UK could generate as much as 20 percent of its energy from geothermal and it does not even have the ideal geological conditions that Taiwan has, imagine the potential for Taiwan!
