In light of the protests about police brutality directed at African Americans in the USA that have dominated western media for some time now, it was inevitable that entertainment media’s role in portraying law enforcement would be subject to increased scrutiny. Sure enough, COPS, the long-running television staple that has been exalting police violence in America for decades has finally been axed after 32 seasons. To non-Americans it might seem surprising that a show that has been depicting the excessive use of force from the authorities against citizens as a virtue has lasted this long in a nation that claims to revere personal freedoms, and where libertarian values are supposedly second to none.
As reality TV shows go, COPS has always been controversial for its mostly pro-police-violence portrayals of law enforcement and overtly biased depictions of the criminally accused that are apprehended in each episode. COPS is not the only reality TV law enforcement show that glorifies police violence, so no doubt some of the other series will be examined for their relevance; however, it is unlikely that this will be the end of the sub-genre, considering the public’s deep and ongoing fascination with guns, drugs and violence and crime in general. The sad thing is that the demise of this show will not lead to a cessation of violence from the police; it will just temporarily decrease the amount of documentary evidence the world has of it.
