It has been a long while coming, but finally the burger patty that has been hyped as the closest thing to looking, tasting and smelling like real meat, all without containing any meat, is finally going mainstream. Impossible Foods? Beyond Meat? If you haven’t heard of these companies or their products yet, then you are behind the times. These are the companies that are attempting to save the earth and revolutionise the world’s diets by replacing meat with meat-substitutes that are totally plant-based.
The concept of a meat-like substitute is certainly an appealing intermediate step to wean consumers off consuming animal flesh. The gradual realisation of the extreme harm to the planet that livestock farming has with its enormous contributions to climate change, is one of the biggest motivating factors pushing people who actually care about the health and future of the planet away from meat. Then there is the awful mistreatment of animals, breeding them and subjecting them to horribly inhumane conditions purely for the sake of killing and eating them. Add to that the widely-recognised negative effects on health that the consumption of meat results in, and you have very convincing reasons for supporting the innovations in the food industry such as these brands are attempting. If you were looking for something to give you a nudge in the right direction so you can stop living in a constant state of cognitive dissonance (read hypocrisy) regarding your supposed concern for the welfare of animals and the planet, this could be it! 參考資料: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/has-the-impossible-burger-pushed-america-to-peak-meat/2019/04/05/72235e52-57cc-11e9-9136-f8e636f1f6df_story.html?utm_term=.150d0993aa6d |
