Is there anything ‘intelligent’ about ‘intelligent design’? It certainly sounds like a candidate for the most obvious use of a misnomer, if linguists were ever to run a competition for such a term. This yet-to-evolve superstitious belief system is an almost perfect demonstration of how ancient people, lacking the intelligence, knowledge, language or science to explain things, usually reverted to supernatural explanations of phenomena occurring in the natural world. This extremely primitive method of attributing anything complex, impressive or otherwise beyond the comprehension of one’s undeveloped faculties is an unusual combination of ignorance mixed with human arrogance. It runs along the lines of (un-)reasoning that if a human can’t explain or make it, then it must be made by a supernatural being, because humans are clearly the most intelligent, capable and awesome inhabitants of this earth, and therefore it could only have been designed by some deity with a whole lot of time and a complete lack of reason, compassion, logic or humanity, QED. The examples and explanations in the article quite adequately demonstrate how absurdly short-sighted and clueless this line of “thinking” is, and as far back as Charles Darwin there were even reasonable explanations in science to prove otherwise. Yet society continues to tolerate and even encourage this kind of backwardness even in the 21st century! Why is that? Surely if there really was something or someone who had intelligently designed humans, we wouldn’t be so stupid? https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-11-07/evolution-supported-by-bacterial-flagellar-motor/11635276 |
