With less than a week to go until the US elections, let’s take one more look at how investigative reporting has exposed the truly dodgy nature of the business dealings of the self-proclaimed “king of debt”, Donald Trump. This type of reporting is invaluable for several reasons, not least because it allows us to cut through all the lies, misinformation and bias that so often muddies the waters surrounding such complex issues in politics. Articles such as this, along with the recent series by the New York Times that reveals how Trump has been avoiding paying taxes despite his best efforts at preventing this information being made public, are really one of the most powerful and effective methods we have in the free press of holding corrupt and dishonest leaders to account, so it is definitely worth reading them to find out the truth. As mentioned last week, Trump has many personal, family and business interests invested outside of the USA, much of which he has tried to dress up as diplomacy and official presidential business. Shady international dealings aside though, even his domestic business interests are mired in debt, and the financial data collected in this article suggest that he could well be in line for a seventh bankruptcy! As much as a billion dollars could be owed by his businesses, so it may be that he will attempt to avoid meeting his obligations to his lenders once more, yet again leaving his investors, employees and banks to foot the bill, while he gets off scot-free and with little or no impact on his personal fortune. These conflicts of interest with his personal finances and business dealings and his responsibilities of leading the USA and the “free world” are clear, and it is a testament to the corruption of values and legislative failings that exist in US politics that such a person could even be accepted as a suitable candidate to lead the nation, let alone actually be elected and serve in office. Whether or not he gets re-elected is another story though… https://www.forbes.com/sites/danalexander/2020/10/16/donald-trump-has-at-least-1-billion-in-debt-more-than-twice-the-amount-he-suggested/#17f377433067 ===我是分隔線=== 💡這個專欄目的是訓練同學聰明閱讀。
