One luxury item I own is my RIMOWA carry-on suitcase. Well, actually, I’ve got three of them now — once you get hooked, it’s hard to stop. I’ve always loved travelling, so I figured if I was going to be flying around constantly, I needed luggage that could really stand the test of time.

RIMOWA, in case you haven’t heard, is a German brand famous for its grooved aluminium design. It’s almost iconic — people recognise it from a mile away. I bought my first one about twenty years ago, and since then it’s tagged along with me to maybe twenty countries across Europe, America, and Asia.

Even on cobblestone streets in Europe, the wheels rolled so smoothly that I never had to break a sweat. And trust me, it’s been dropped, tossed, and battered in ways you can’t even imagine. Yet never once has it gone out of shape. In fact, the more scratches and dents it collects, the more character it seems to have — almost like it’s writing its own travel diary. My friends sometimes joke that with its shiny silver look I resemble an arms dealer, which, funnily enough, I take as a compliment.

Now, after two decades, the only issues are a slightly stiff lock and a worn-out lining. The repair quote was nearly 8,000 New Taiwan dollars. Not cheap, but at the end of the day, if it lasts me another twenty years, that’s a bargain.

For me, this suitcase is more than just luggage. It’s been a trusty sidekick on some of my most memorable adventures. And every time I pack it, I’m reminded that when you invest in quality, it pays you back for decades, not just years.
